Sodium bicarbonate is a white compound made from a mineral called natron. This product has multiple uses, both medicinal and cleaning. Used on clothing, it helps to clean the garments, eliminating bad odors and stubborn stains.

It can also help soften your clothes, enhance the effect of the detergent, and keep your clothes white. In addition, it also helps to keep the washing machine clean.

Advantages of bicarbonate in cleaning

By using it to clean clothes instead of detergent, we are helping to protect the environment. You have to consider that detergent has aggressive ingredients that can harm the planet. On the other hand, it has certain advantages over detergent:

Therefore, if we want to take advantage of its properties as a deodorant before washing clothes, we have two options.

If the odor is localized

If you want to eliminate the bad smell from a part of the garment, such as the armpits, you can create a paste with baking soda and water and let it rest in the determined area.

If the smell is throughout the garment

In this case, it is best to leave the garment soaked overnight in a solution of baking soda with water. To do this, use a cup of baking soda per 4 liters of water.

Baking soda as a natural stain remover

This mineral compound is also a great natural stain remover, plus it’s gentle on most types of fabric. It is perfect for removing oil, mud or food stains, among other substances. 

According to this study by the American Dental Association, in fact, it is a great whitener used by dentists in their offices and even in toothpastes.

Preparation

To remove stains, mix the baking soda with a little water, hydrogen peroxide or vinegar to form a paste, and rub it lightly on the stain, you can use an old toothbrush if the fabric is resistant. Then, let the paste work on the stain for 15 minutes before rinsing it off or putting it in the washing machine.

Finally, we will rinse the clothes with plenty of warm water to remove the excesses. On more delicate fabrics, it is better to use a wet cloth.
